The G.A.A.L.S. (gorgeous african american latina sisters) grant is a grant from SAMHSA (Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration) to provide prevention and education services to women of color in the areas of substance abuse and HIV/AIDS. This grant serves all 23 counties served by Special Health Resources and is working to help women of color avoid substance abuse and HIV/AIDs and other STDs. Women of color are the fastest growing group contracting the HIV virus and they need to be educated on effective ways to protect themselves. Substance abuse is closely linked to HIV infection rates as well as STD infection and by presenting the two forms of education and prevention together, women of color will have the best chance to avoid being infected and becoming addicted.
Congratulations to the staff of GAALS for their ongoing successes with our clients and the very important assistance and education they have been able to provide. And, for the renewal of the Grant for the coming year.
